Lacrimal Surgery

The lacrimal system is responsible for the production and drainage of tears. When the drainage system is blocked, excess tears spill over on to the cheek. Blockage can result in infection of the tear sac (dacryocystitis).

The first step in treatment is diagnosis of the cause or site of blockage.

The next step is to chose an appropriate treatment. This may involve tightening loose eyelids, snip-opening of the eyelid drainage port (snip punctoplasty), or bypass of the main tear duct (dacryocystorhinostomy).
