Enucleation
Enucleation involves removal of the eyeball due to pain, blindness, tumors, or severe injury. The removed eyeball is usually replaced with a buried integrated implant - usually Medpor. The eye muscles are attached to the implant to provide better movement for the final artificial eye. A clear plastic conformer is placed and the eyelids are temporarily closed for two weeks.
The procedure takes about 50 minutes and requires sedative anesthesia. After four weeks, the clear conformer is removed (like a contact lens) and a fitting with an ocularist for a lifelike prothesis or conformer is arranged.
